Rust

So I got a new game... Rust

This one came from a Steam sale at 50% off. I enjoy survival games, so I've had my eye on this one for a while. I'm going to start it up and come back with my first impressions. Wish me luck!

So, I've played for about 30 minutes.  Here's my first impressions: there seems to be a lot to this game.  Lots of crafting, materials, building types, etc...  The environment doesn't seem to be as destructible as  other games such as 7 Days to Die or Minecraft.  This feels more like Ark in that regard.

I wandered around for a while trying to harvest things with a wooden hammer.  Didn't have much success there.  Finally found enough rocks and wood to make myself a hatchet and I was able to harvest wood from a tree.

I also conquered nudity; I made some pants, shirt, shoes, and found a rather nice looking headdress.  I found the headdress in a box somewhere.  Not sure if this game does random loot in boxes or if that was someone's treasure.  I seem to be the only one on this server at the moment, so I have no one to ask.

Overall, I like this game so far.  I haven't seen that much of it, but I want to keep playing it.  I'll report back with more once I see more of the game.

Ok, I've played a bit longer.  I followed some power lines around for a bit in hopes of finding something interesting.  I never did. I've made a house, killed some wildlife, picked some more plants.

Be it ever so humble, there's no place like it.

I eventually found someone's fort.  Nobody was home, but it looked nice.

With a sign like that, why not go inside?

Here's what I like about the game: I like the feel, the overall look, the ease of crafting.

Here's what I didn't like: The textures need some work.  Some items were very well textured, some were muddy and impossible to discern.  This may have been some kind of Level Of Detail setting, but it was very jarring.
Examples of blurry textures

I'm sure this sign says.. something.
Most things in the world aren't interactive.  You could pick one certain kind of plant, but none others.  Same with planks of wood lying on the ground or stones.  Only certain ones were harvestable, and only then with the right tool.

Do I like the game?  Overall I think I do, I'm sure that once I watch a few YouTube videos, more will become clear.  But that's one thing I don't like about it, that the game wasn't forthcoming with information and now I'll need to watch a video to pick up the basics.

Well, thanks for reading this first review.  Leave a comment if you have any thoughts.
