The Talos Principle

So I got a new game...  The Talos Principle.

I played the beta long ago, and it seemed interesting then.  I've seen someone play the release version, and it looked to be much improved from the version I played.  Again, this one was on sale for pretty cheap, so I picked it up.

I'll be back with my first impressions soon.

Ok, so I've played for about half an hour and I'm impressed with what I've seen so far.  The Talos Principle is a first-person puzzle-solving game.  You play the role of a robot of some kind, tasked with retrieving 'sigils', which look like floating Tetris pieces from among the ruins of some kind of Greek-inspired complex.

About to pickup the green sigil.

So far, all the puzzles have taken the form of using 'jammers' on tripods to immobilize round floating sentries or turn off force-fields that stand between you and the sigils.  Meanwhile, a disembodied voice explains to you that you're being tested by some kind of Godlike being.

What I like so far: The polish is great.  This game has no rough edges that I've seen so far.  The puzzles seem solid, without being too difficult yet.  The option screens are very well done, with plenty of items to choose from when optimizing things like video options or controls.

There are also these 'terminals' scattered around the complex, which resemble old computers.  The player can interact with these terminals using canned inputs, and navigate a strange OS, talk to the computer, and retrieve files from some ancient project.

The puzzles seem to be very unrestricted as to which order you attempt them.

What I don't like: The player has a third person view to choose from.  This is nice, but the animation is a bit awkward in this viewpoint.  Jumping, especially.  It almost seems like jumping was put in as an afterthought, because it doesn't seem like you'd really be able to be very useful in your jumping.

I don't like that it seems that each puzzle is completely isolated from the others.  I'd like it if you gained some kind of ability or items from one area that help you later in other areas, but thus far, it doesn't seem like this will be the case.

I will definitely continue to play this one.

Thanks for reading.
